2011 - Senate Bill 1403

To Steeply Raise All Tobacco Taxes Using The Disabled as an Excuse.

This bill, under the guise of generously funding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), DOUBLES all tobacco taxes - cigs, cigars, loose, smokeless - and 17x the tax on pipe tobacco. For example, the total Federal excise tax on cigarettes would go from $1.01 to $2.01 per pack! And, the bill has an annual inflation adjustment - so, we would see continual increases without legislative approval !

This bill was introduced by Senator Tom Harkin D-Iowa and has 14 other nanny-state co-sponsors (Make a note and vote accordingly next time they’re up for re-election, if they represent you). Quite frankly, I can’t see this passing the current House of Representatives in any shape or form, but we should voice opposition nonetheless.

Below is a link to the Thomas Library of Congress skinny on the bill, including content, status and all votes pertaining to it. Luckily, this thing died in committee, but expect it to return if the leadership returns to the Democrats.
